While Jackson Hole needs no introduction, many visitors haven’t yet discovered the incredible value and beauty just over Teton Pass in Victor and Driggs. The Idaho side of the Teton Range rivals Jackson in terms of outdoor recreation in both summer and winter, and plenty of room to roam with larger properties and greater distances between homes. All about a 40-mile drive from the Jackson Hole airport.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park South Entrance is about 55 miles from Jackson’s Town Square. Old Faithful is an additional 40-mile drive from the South Entrance. Visitors should be mindful that the road through Yellowstone is closed to vehicles in the winter, but remains open to snowcoach and snowmobile traffic.

From Teton Valley, ID, you can access the park from the West Entrance in West Yellowstone, MT, which is just a 45-mile drive from Driggs. West Yellowstone is the closest entrance to Old Faithful and also a town to explore in and of itself.

Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park is accessible by three entrances. The Moose entrance is 13 miles north of the town of Jackson and is open year-round. The Granite Canyon entrance just up the road from Teton Village is only open in the summer and is generally considered to be a slower more scenic option used if you’re looking for hikes near that particular entrance.

The Moran entrance is about 30 miles north of Jackson on the northern end of the park. Entering GTNP here gives you great access to Jackson Lake and Colter Bay and you’re just 20 miles south of Yellowstone National Park. From Teton Valley, ID, the Moose Entrance is the closest and is a little less than a 40-mile drive from Victor.

Dining

For a tiny town in the northwest corner of Wyoming, Jackson has some impressive dining chops. No matter if you’re staying in Town, in the Aspens, or in the Village, you have plenty of options to choose from. Town has the largest selection with several upscale options, as well as international and more casual fare. The Village is of course the best place to be for aprés ski, and also has several restaurants serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dining in the Aspens is limited, but it’s only about a 10-minute drive to either the Village or downtown Wilson and just 15 minutes to the Town of Jackson.

As with anything in Jackson Hole, it all depends on traffic. So, if having a wide variety of restaurants within walking distance is important to you, we recommend staying in Town or in Teton Village.

Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village is known around the world as “The Big One” and is frequently given top honors by ski magazines. If you’ve come to ride, Teton Village is obviously a great place to stay, but the Aspens and the West Bank are solid options too.

And realistically with the START bus stopping at more than 10 locations in the Town of Jackson, as well as the Stilson parking lot and at the Aspens along Moose-Wilson Road, it’s pretty easy to hop on the bus and get dropped off right at the clock tower in the Village.

Nordic Skiing

While Jackson is known for its steeps and deeps, the Nordic skiing is nothing to sneeze at. If speeding downhill isn’t your thing, or if you’re taking a day off, there are several excellent cross-country options to be found. If you’d like to get out in Grand Teton National Park, stop by Skinny Skis and let the pros get you sorted with rental gear and set off to the best place for you.

If you’re looking for groomed track, Teton Pines on the West Bank along Moose Wilson Road is open to the public with great rentals and lessons. And finally, JH Nordic is a non-profit run by local Nordic skiers that gives current updates on trail conditions.

Golf

The Jackson Hole and Teton Valley area boasts a multitude of world-class golf courses – some right in town and some further afield. Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis is a Robert Trent Jones course just north of the town of Jackson. Teton Pines along the Village Road in Wilson designed by Arnold Palmer is a challenging par 72 course.

On the Idaho side, you’ll find The Links at Teton Peaks is a 5 star 18-hole golf course in Driggs, Idaho. Teton Reserve in Teton Valley is a Hale Irwin-designed course that’s challenging to a serious golfer and accessible to beginners.

Fly Fishing

The fly-fishing in Jackson Hole and Teton Valley is so good that in 1982, it lured US Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Paul Voelker to a meeting and turned it into an annual tradition that routinely draws the biggest names in global central banking. There are plenty of reputable guides in the area including Reel Deal Anglers, Grand Teton Fly Fishing, and Snake River Angler.

Whitewater Rafting and Scenic Float Trips

You can also enjoy the Snake River from a raft or kayak. With options for people of all ages and skill levels, a trip down the Snake offers great wildlife viewing opportunities with stunning views of the Tetons. There are plenty of reputable guides in the area including Barker-Ewing, Dave Hansen, Jackson Hole Whitewater, Mad River, and Sands.

Wildlife Viewing

Whether you’re very familiar with the mega-fauna of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem or you’ve always wanted to see a live grizzly bear or moose, you’ve come to the right place in Jackson. Jackson is home to the largest elk herd in the nation and there are opportunities to see grizzly and black bear, moose, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, and more. Get in touch with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris, Scenic Safaris, or Backcountry Safaris, and start planning your wildlife adventure!

Hiking

Grand Teton National Park is a great place to get out and stretch your legs in this gorgeous landscape. Lupine Meadows trailhead is the starting point to climb the Grand Teton and even if you don’t plan to go all the way to the top, there are spectacular vistas just minutes from the trailhead. Biking

The trails and mountains of the area are calling and you must go! Get after it with some serious trails on Teton Pass, or just cruise around town and even on a paved trail up to Dornan’s in Moose for a beer on their open-air rooftop deck. Or find something in between.

Mountain Bike the Tetons is a local non-profit run by a group of bike enthusiasts based in Teton Valley, Idaho. They offer recommendations on where to go based on your skill level and location. You can also head out to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort or Grand Targhee for Teton Mountain Bike Tours and Teton Science School, both offer guide services. Or, if you’re looking to buy a bike, Hoff’s Bikesmith just west of the Wort Hotel on Broadway or Fitzgerald’s Bicycles are long-time local businesses with knowledgeable, friendly staff.

Horseback Riding

Setting out on horseback for a short trail ride, or a long pack trip is a popular way to experience the landscape and a great family bonding experience. There are several outfitters that offer a variety of experiences. Swift Creek Outfitters offers trail rides about 40 miles north of the town of Jackson, and Wilderness Trails can get you out for a scenic trail ride or into some serious backcountry adventures! And for a truly unique experience, look into a horse whispering demonstration at the Diamond X Ranch.
